To the "Old" Scrooge ... and Back
This Christmas Eve I will -- per my custom -- watch "A Christmas Carol", with the fabulous Alistair Sim. This 1951 film is by far the best version of the Charles Dickens' classic, principally due to the brilliant portrayal of Scrooge by Sim. Through Sim's work, we see the various shades of Scrooge ... the shifting emotions, the various twists and sad turns that led Scrooge to his appointment with the spirits on Christmas Eve.
I have always been somewhat of a Scrooge apologist. That is, it perplexes me that Scrooge seems to be remembered almost exclusively for what he was at the beginning of the story -- the "old" Scrooge -- rather than the man he became at the end of the story. To me, particularly since becoming a Christian myself, Scrooge's repentance and redemption define him. Yet, my view of this great tale continues to evolve even now.
In the last several viewings, I have focused my attention more upon the sad story of Scrooge's life before the fateful Christmas Eve. He was indeed a hated man, so much so that no one would even attend his funeral. His servants would ironically "cast lots" for his belongings. Just how did he get to this point of such intense personal pain that he rejected God and, as a result, his fellow man?
The Road to the "Old" Scrooge
Ebeneezer Scrooge had a relatively happy childhood. His favorite person in the world was his beloved sister Fan. You'll recall that young Ebeneezer started a promising career working for ol' Mr. Fezziwig, the plump, laughing boss known for his great Christmas parties and generosity. As his young career and life progressed, however, Scrooge became more and more like his power-driven colleague and future business partner, Jacob Marley. As Scrooge fell more in love with himself and his own ambition, he then began to lose the love of his fiance Alice. Eventually, as both Scrooge and Alice recognized their paths in life were diverging, the couple broke their engagement.
All of the foregoing might have been bearable for Scrooge, though, if not for the death of his beloved Fan. Scrooge's sister died giving birth to his nephew Fred, that same persistent, annoying lad who kept asking his Uncle Ebeneezer to come to Christmas dinner each year, to no avail, of course. To Scrooge, Fred's invitations were merely reminders of his devastating loss and his aloneness. But who besides Scrooge knew this?
The end of the "old" Scrooge really begins when the Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge back to Fan's death bed to hear words that a young, distraught Ebeneezer never heard: "Take care of my boy." Hearing for the first time Fan's death bed request in light of his long-standing rejection of Fred, Scrooge is heartbroken and sobs ... maybe for the first time ever. Trying to communicate with his long-departed sister, Scrooge cries, "I'm sorry Fan. Please forgive me."
Did Scrooge have even one friend?
Scrooge's life of self-absorption had left him completely alone. His business partner Jacob Marley really was only that -- a business partner. It was only after his death that Marley tells Scrooge the hard truth as a friend would: "Mankind was my business!" And in the Cratchit household, even Mrs. Cratchit openly criticizes Scrooge at Christmas dinner, and Bob Cratchit gives Scrooge dutiful loyalty only. The Cratchit family knew of the ugliness that was Ebeneezer Scrooge firsthand. As Scrooge's dream comes to an end, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come points to the bare headstone of Ebeneezer Scrooge. At this point, the truth is evident: Scrooge is on the road to reaping the emotional desolation and desperation that he has sown.
But what of the spirits? Perhaps these are Scrooge's friends. In one sense they are, but in fact they (like Marley) are really just sent upon an errand to visit Scrooge. It would seem then that Scrooge's only friend was the one who sent the spirits to rescue him on Christmas Eve.
Compassion for Scrooge from the One who sent the spirits
The spirits sent to visit Scrooge represent angels sent from heaven, by the Lord Himself. But how can this be, that God would have compassion on this horrible, greedy man who lived alone in a huge house and treated all around him with contempt and disrespect? How truly unloveable a character. God intervened nonetheless.
To me, the redemption of Scrooge illustrates God's unfathomable, amazing grace and unending love. For when all others saw a greedy old man, God saw a man whose bad choices and broken heart had led to spiritual blindness. And in His compassion, God led the spirits to touch the eyes of Scrooge.
But this still doesn't answer the question: "Why?" Why did God show compassion on the sinner Scrooge? Perhaps it was because Scrooge was some one's little boy once, a young man whose foolish choices had taken their toll, and a young man who had lost the most important person in his life. But most importantly, God saw a child of His ... fallen and far away, but no less a child.
That Scrooge's pain and bitterness were largely the result of his own choices was irrelevant. When all the world had given up on him, God was still looking ... still believing.
Compassion of the Son of Man
We Christians often emphasize the deity of Jesus while ignoring His humanity. Thus, while understanding the significance of the deity of Jesus, we miss the complete picture of the Savior. Indeed, Jesus' favorite title for Himself was the Son of Man, a title that emphasizes His humanity. As the Son of Man, He is able to identify with our weaknesses, to understand what it is like to fail, to have broken dreams ... to be alone and without hope. Every one has a story, and He knows them all. For those alone and hurting at the holidays, He understands and is there.
For some, believing in the God of the Bible is seemingly impossible, for a whole host of reasons. Yet, He understands what it is to be tempted. He understands confronting impossible situations and odds. He sees all, even the ugly that others don't see and that we ourselves don't see, and still He loves us. Indeed, He loves the world. This is mind-boggling yet comforting to me. I think the incomprehensibe love and grace of God had a similar effect on John the Apostle, too, for in his Gospel of John he simply called himself "the one that Jesus loved."
Also comforting is that He sees those things in us ... the light, the potential, the unique bent ... that is each person's fingerprint. He seeks out and redeems those qualities for His glory and our good at the same time. Why? I don't know. People can be a lot of trouble and heartache. But I think God does it just because He is good.
The unanswered question
Recall that when Scrooge's worst fears are realized and he contemplates his tombstone and barren grave, he asks the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, "Are these things that will be?" Scrooge seeks an answer from this last, appropriately silent and ominous spirit. No answer is given. Anxiety builds. Still no answer ... and then he wakes. Scrooge then realizes that he can help provide the answer. What will he do with the information that he has been given? It is Scrooge's choice, and he makes the right one, of course. As a result, not only Scrooge's life is transformed, but Tiny Tim's and countless other lives are changed and touched in a way that unbelief would not have permitted.
Thus, God saw and pursued the "old" Scrooge when all others had given up and no one else cared or believed in Scrooge. God made a way to get to Scrooge via the three spirits who showed Scrooge his need for redemption. The "new" Scrooge was born, however, only when he dared to believe, to finally trust and allow God into his life.
God bless us, every one. Merry Christmas.

Next to last post o' the year ... a veritable holiday smorgaswhatever
Hope you are well. The commenters all should have restocked their ammo by now after the firefight with my old nemesis PW yesterday. That was the most hostile action around here since Pussguzzler opened up on me and a convoy of Cutterites a few months ago. Remember that 38-comment firefight?! It was a doozy. PG, too, was driven away by kindness and reason.
But fret not for ol' DC (I know you're not), because sticks and stones don't even break my bones. I mean, do we really care what some one who doesn't even know us thinks about us? We should not take ourselves so seriously. These are just words here. Sure, there are ideas behind them and some one behind the ideas. But ol' PW doesn't even know who he is talking to. Of course, you all don't either, but ... Actually, I am the newly-appointed President of Texblogistan. But I digress ...
Mosul update
It looks more and more like a suicide bomber was responsible for the Mosul tragedy yesterday. Perhaps he has now learned of that unfortunate Islamic translation error and is being greeted by 72 Virginians (i.e., Washington, P. Henry, Madison, Jefferson, etc.) as we speak. We need to smile and move on with our lives and our respective missions. Our troops are doing this, and they will get the job done.
A couple of interesting items on the radio ...
Heard today on Rush's show that our top-notch interrogators at Gitmo are being accused of torture by the ACLU again, this time for ... get this ... are you ready? ... wrapping detainees in the Israeli flag. Yes, you read that correctly. Now, I must posit the following question: To what kind of warped mind is such activity "torture"? And if it is torture, why? Mustn't torture be perceived as such by the civilized world? Would it feel to you like being on a stretching rack to have the flag of Israel around you? I suspect not. It sounds to me like Israel may have the only legitimate beef here.
Also, many of you know that the 60th anniversary of the ferocious Battle of the Bulge is upon us. We lost 19,000 ... yes, 19,000 troops were killed in that battle. Many more were wounded and captured. Last week, a 79-year-old Battle of the Bulge veteran, Don from Sandusky, Ohio, weighed in on the milestone. He said he was "70% disabled" but "above ground". Needless to say, he got my attention. I was scribbling notes and dodging cars and thus couldn't take it down verbatim, but here is the gist of it:
"I landed at Normandy, and was wounded twice before the Battle of the Bulge ... where I was captured by the Germans ... I've never been so cold in my life ... I was held prisoner until two months after the battle ended. The Germans weren't so bad to us, but the Russians were ruthless bastards. They were holding us in exchange for other prisoners until we were rescued by American troops ... No American would have refused to go into battle because of lacking armor. If I had, I would have been court-martialed."Cheers to you, Don. Sir, we view freedom from atop your shoulders.
Programming notes
I note that a number of linkees are now linkers to other linkees. It is all good, and it warms my heart. Great to see. Just creates a cumbayahesqe feeling. However, beware that breeding within the Goomba family could produce disasterous results ... such as an ugly offspring with three heads. Don't know why I felt the need to tell you that, but seriously ... The esprit-de-corps in the blogosphere is really something. Many of you have helped me greatly this year with this endeavor. You know who you are. I want to thank the linkees/linkers, regular commenters, and especially those of you who are linked near the top of this page. I wish you all great success in your business, personal and blogging lives in '05. Let's all conquer the blogosphere together. Somebody's gotta have the best sites out there. Why not us?
And don't forget ... Press conference on 1/3 ... Undisclosed location and time ... but pool reporters have been selected and have signed confidentiality agreements. They do not know where they are being taken. We'll see.
As I ponder the future of this site ... questions arise: Can sanity dwell with insanity? Can reason with humor? Can light with darkness? Can God with man? I have my own thoughts, but you will have to decide for yourselves.
See you tomorrow ...

The "here's-what-I-was-talking-about-this-is-unbelievable-are-they-reading?" dept. reports in ...
Needing a lift and a laugh ... I click over to my man Goomba, and I see that he has scooped freakin' CNN again. Check out the presser on the State Dept. speed-dial scandal. Heads are going to roll over this.
Pressing on ...
Update: See comment thread below under "Heavy Heart" post. Pusillanimous Wanker, mugged with compassion and reason, leaves. Says he's outta here. Fires parting shots at DC and whole gang, calling them "hateful" ... presumably even JulieB, a nice Democrat from Northern California. PW drops F-Bomb and says something about DC being a jerk using circular reasoning. DC scrambles to LZ ... rotors spinning. Does not leave, however. DC troops empty magazines at fleeing PW. Developing ...
Update: Humble Devildog gets in trash truck and picks up Big D. Both say they are heading for Arkansas to smoke out PW and bring him to justice. HD recalls that circular reasoning was a UCMJ violation when he was in USMC. DC, too. Impacting ...
Update Again: In hastily-called press conference, DC announces that no one was hurt in the PW dust-up. "PW fired at me and my people and headed for the hills. It does appear he escaped, and it's probably a good thing. Apparently, HD didn't get a good shot. I have told HD and Big D to call off the search. Well, I am not going to let this little fracas cause us to change our open borders policy. We welcome all visitors, even those immune to logic and compassion. It' s Christmastime, and in the spirit of the season, I just want to say 'No hard feelings, PW. Come back when you cool down. But remember that if you wish to show your lily white michael moore, then expect my homeys to spank it. XXOOXXOXXO. Love, DC'" DC forbids further questions. Press corps stands in awe. Rushes to write the incredible story.
Heavy Heart today ...
I see that the perpetrators claim to represent some form/brand of Islam and indeed that this murder was committed in the name of Allah. Are we now so calloused that we don't see the absurdity, outrageousness, and incendiary nature of such a claim? If Allah indeed sanctions such acts, then who would want to know or follow him any way? Wouldn't eternity in hell be better? Oh, I forgot the payoff, but may I ask: What kind of moron believes that you get 72 girls at your disposal for your personal pleasure for all eternity if you kill an American? And by the way, what do the women suicide bombers get? I don't recall any provisions for them in radical Islamic teaching. Are you kidding me?! Is this still planet Earth?!
Am I upset? You better believe I am upset.
Why? Because some one's son or daughter won't be celebrating the holidays and the rest of their family will be grieving instead ... Because some Iraqis who were just trying to get on their feet, to live their lives in peace and have a better life than they did under Saddam, are dead. Their crime was wanting a better life, and their punishment was death ... Because some people serving food to our troops, working hard, sweating, dog-tired but performing honorable labor, people who have family and friends and people who care about them ... they are dead. Gone.
There will be no 72 virgins for any of the foregoing, though. For to the murdering despots who now threaten worldwide civilization, all of the foregoing are "infidels" unworthy to live -- the Christian, the Jew, the non-conforming, freedom-seeking Muslim, indeed every person who does not view the world through the psychotic lenses of radical Islam.
And where's the world outrage? Oh, some will question America and our policy in Iraq, for sure. But how many will talk about the real menace to civilization, much less do something about it? And where is the Muslim outrage? How many Muslims died in the Mosul murders? Have you seen the NY Times' editorial condemning this dastardly act? Where are Democrats other than Zell Miller and Joe Lieberman talking about the evil that we face?
Events like these reveal existence of and indeed the reasons behind the deep ideological divide here at home and abroad.

Remember when ...
The English on the "Art of Persuasion"
Read this nice quote from our friends at The London News Review:
Now I feel bad for supporting the President. Oh, well. You know there is truth in every criticism. For instance, I am: 1) wrapped in my stars and stripes; and 2) a whooping twit. The 2004 election means one thing for certain: great swaths of America are as DUMB AS F---. To dumb to live, let alone vote. You stupid, good-for-nothing, hick[s], sitting there in your stretchy trousers, wrapped in your stars and stripes, clutching at each others' fat hands and singing God Bless America while your blessed commander-in-[chief] sells the world for a quick buck. You whooping twits, sucking up the lies like mother's milk ... You deserve to die."
If only ... if only ... if only ...
Remember when I postulated about the odds of this guy being a real difference-maker in election? What if he had been atop the ticket instead of Kerry? We'll never know. But if the Michael Moore wing of the Democratic Party has anything to say about it, we need to keep a sharp eye out for him in '08.
A remarkable post: "The Heart of America"
Showing his mettle as the Best Military Blogger, Blackfive posted
this email from a Marine gunnery sergeant in Iraq. Thanks to Blackfive for this remarkable post about the remarkable heart of this remarkable land.
Press Conference on 1/3/05
With the election season behind us (I know, the Ohio recount is still ongoing, but humor me), I move toward a somewhat regular rhythm of life. And that will include this here (Texan = this) blog. More about that at my press conference on 1/3. I will cover it here -- or maybe Nickie G. will -- in case the cable networks don't pick it up.
Saturday, December 18, 2004
By the way, Nickie's new web address is ...
http://nickiegoomba.blogspot.com. He's got some very Goomba-esque stuff up already. I have no idea how he gets the press conferences, but he is really on the ball.
I am back but it's a crazy holiday weekend around here. Time to get limbered up and start making that Christmas list.
Maybe I will put some more light-hearted stuff up Sunday evening. It's the holidays, so I am having some fun. I will save the serious stuff and resulting consternation until after the New Year.
I see that Julie is up and running. Not surprisingly, she is posting some good, very Julie-esque stuff. Julie always has interesting things to say and she tells a great story. She knows we may not always agree, but we -- and Al Franken-- say "that's (pregnant pause) okay". Because we're friends. See, we right-wing-nut-jobs can be inclusive and have a heart, too.
Oh, the picture? This is a mug shot of the hackers that attacked my site last week and destroyed Goomba's and set his computer on fire. They were apprehended late last night. They were found camped in front of their TV waiting for Keith Olberman's show to come on. Actually, these dudes are from some psycho rock band. I think they're called the "Recount 5". No, but really ... Thanks to Gordon for turning me on to the Re-C 5.

Smartest Man Alive Speaks out on Islam
And amen.
If so ... I must ask: Is this funny? Is this freedom? Is this the conduct of people who wish to be taken seriously? Is this the conduct of people who are winning? Is this the conduct of people who respect the rights, space, property, and hard work of others? Is this the conduct of the confident? Is this the conduct of people who need help?
What is it about the supposed purveyors of freedom and tolerance that they would do such a thing? And to such a great guy.
Update ... Intruders evicted, site renovations continue at rapid pace
As for this site, renovations continue ...
But R .... ah ah ahhhhhh .... Almost slipped. More on that on Jan. 3 when I unveil some additional information re: myself and also a couple of new items on this here blog. Also coming on Jan. 3, I will explain what I am going to try to do with this thing in '05. Looking forward to it. It will be thrilling and chilling. You don't want to miss it. Want a little hint? Too bad.
Regarding the holiday schedule, for now ... I will tell you that I am off to a top-secret mission on Thursday and will not return back until late Friday p.m. Probably will lay down some truth on Sunday evening or so. Then ... Christmas message on 12/22 or 12/23. Then ... I am out of here until 1/3. You can leave comments for me when I return. I may check them in the meantime. But, I am going to give it a rest before we hit the ground running in '05. Sorry, I am not going to get a "guest-blogger" to cover your insatiable desire for DC material. (What do people think these blogs are with the guest blogging stuff ... the Tonight Show?) Besides, if it was a guest, it wouldn't be me, so ... Also, I pledge to not ever say "light posting". If I do, feel free to slap your computer.
All of this reminds me. I know there is news going on right now. We have the Kerik debacle. We have the continued assault on the American electoral system by the hard left. I realize Peterson got death this week. We have the continuing heroic fight by our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. But remember this: This is not a news site. There is an information site, but this is principally and opinion and entertainment (mostly mine) site. Hopefully, there is some inspiration going on here, too. And there has been and will continue to be a blend of the serious and the not-so-dire. More on that on 1/3.
A couple of other items ...
I have been "dark" for a while, as my "Hello" program was on strike. Getting rather techno-savvy, I got it running again. So ... if you're good, maybe I will provide a pic and a caption or two.
What do you think of the new link line up? If I do say so myself, it is mighty fine. If you are looking for news, opinion, or humor ... look to your right and scroll on down. The entire universe is not there, but there is a nice representation of it.
I will get looking for a pic to show you. In the meantime, y'all be good.
Out
P.S. Oh, here's a picture ... and a breaking news story:

Mystery Solved ... Moonbat feces found in Daisy's template
But first, I want to thank all who helped ... and apologize to Sherry for rushing off to battle without properly saying goodbye. But I am back. I have awarded myself a "Template Action" Ribbon.
Thanks to JR, Dan, Jeremy ... All of you helped me get there. The problem originated with the Fresco site that lists referrers. Note that it is gone. I would suggest you stay away from this thing at all costs (in spite of the obvious benefits) because ... large links can jam the side bar, like mine was. In addition to Fresco's large link problem, if you are signed into your dashboard, ANY ONE (I repeat ANY ONE) can get into your template ... and wreak havoc ... and even post by clicking on the "No Session -- Redirecting". The horrah.
It is very obvious that some bats flew into the Cutter. I had to go in and smoke 'em out myself. I tracked them by following the little pieces of bat crap they sprinkled all over the Cutter template. Very cute, fellas. I realize you could have done more ... but I can, too. Thanks for helping me with my HTML and just generally learning how to be a bigger pain in your little bat hineys. Listen, when you are as small as you people are, you have hineys. You better get your licks in now, because I am going to have my own military in '08.
If you noticed, in addition to the semi-colons they sprinkled about, the 'bat(s) also took out the graphics on my link buttons. They seemed in particular to not like the Milblogs button. Go figure.
For operational security, I can't reveal completely how the mystery was solved. However, I can tell you that I actually pulled the Rove hack-o-tron out of the trunk of my car (recall that I covered southern Ohio with it), then pointed the blessed device toward the holy city of Austin ... a couple of chants and pulls on the lever and ... Voila ... Template good as new.
Hey, incidentally, did y'all know that the Ohio electors met today?
Update: As of midnight PST, Goomba's site appears that it may have been struck, as well. In fact, it looks like a dirty bomb went off over there. Let's hope we hear from Nickie G. soon ...
Monday, December 13, 2004
But hey, I found the blanket and got a kiss blown to me before she went to bed. So ... it wasn't all bad tonight. See you all soon.
This could be ... The End
Okay ... I've done it again.
Update: The Homeys (the Texican Tattler) are on the case again, specifically JR, who bailed me out last time, as well. JR has gone into deep template research mode. If he finds the problem, I am considering a 5$ donation to the Ohio recount effort. Thanks, JR. And ... friends of DC ... pay a visit to the Texican Tattler and say "hey" to the great folks over there.

Breaking .... Rove Vote Hack-o-tron discovered in Cranky Neocon's trunk
Re: Froggy, reader Julie makes a good point. Froggy is in striking distance. Let your conscience be your guide. Daisy can support Froggy. He was a Marine for a while. Go vote.

Whatever happened to ...
Maybe the moonbats have flown to Washington, where the Democrats are engaged in a second recount there ... this one a hand recount.
Maybe Ohio is counting at night, so the moonbats can watch? I don't know. Do they have to hold the card upside down so they can see? Doesn't the electoral college (presidential, not blog name change) meet this weekend any way?
I think the Democrats need to follow through with their pledge and fund this recount effort fully so every vote gets counted. It's about the process, you know, and not about changing the result.
Conspiracy theories die hard, but the Ohio Diebold/missing machine/Rove vote hack-o-tron/massive suppression/there-must-be-a-pony-in-there-somewhere one is going the way of the buffalo with not even a hint of a stampede. What does a bat stampede sound like any way?
Naked partisanship ... albeit noble
American Warmonger -- We have already got our boy Jeremy up to about 9th ... not bad. Vote for Jeremy, because even though he's a conflicted "moderate", on nat'l security he is right on and he blogs like a madman. Great blog friend. Already raising funds for recount, to ensure integrity of the process.
Cranky Neocon -- Gordon seems mired in third place in his category (best of the top 1000-1750) but he linked me. He didn't link me under the "Titans", but I'll take it. And ... he is to be linked as part of the massive renovation that will soon be underway at the site. So, vote for him. Seriously, he has a dang funny blog, even though he fights like a girl. And not only is it funny, there's actually a point to it all. Imagine that. Even though he may fall short in the first go around, Gordon is in recount range, at any rate. Gordon, let me know if you need me to help you with the electoral college.
Ogre's Politics & Views -- Ogre is a former Marine, so I am voting for him. Marines are not known to show naked partisanship, but in this case ... Ogre is a future link, too (with New Year renovations). Ogre is a little gruff and he thinks I'm a moderate, but he's a good guy. Plus, he looks to be in a position to be a 2000-Nader for ol' Froggy, who has climbed to a very close second, clearly close enough to steal the election with a hand recount.
A word about Froggy ... a great blog and worthy of a vote. For those who don't know, this former Navy Seal also served a tour in the USMC. However, Froggy fell off the pedestal when I learned that he left the Marine Corps to join the Seals because his USMC recruiter lied to him. What?! Say it isn't so. Recruiters lying? Hahahahahahahahahhahaha!!! ... Whooo!! That's a good one. Those guys are paid to lie. C'mon, Froggy!! Even lawyers claim that they are technically not supposed to be lying, but recruiters are paid to lie.

Did you see the Marine carping at Sec. Rumsfeld yesterday?
There's a reason why young Marines don't face down the Secretary of Defense like Army Spc. Thomas Wilson did yesterday. Marines are taught ... from the first day they arrive at either boot camp or officer candidate school ... that they are lucky to be assigned a freaking weapon and if they need something, then Uncle Sam would provide it. If Marines don't have it, they don't need it. That's the message.
I exaggerate somewhat, but this message will sound familiar to my former Marine readers. But there's more. Marines are also taught that it is a privilege to be in that uniform and to wear the title. As such, there is really no reason to complain -- about anything. Every day is a great day in the Marine Corps. The greatest benefit to being a Marine is being a Marine. You may think this is a bit simple, but it's a pervasive -- and practically effective -- attitude. And this Marine attitude has for 229 years led to winning results in the most difficult and dire circumstances.
Marines also know there is certainly no reason to complain to sniveling reporters who are seeking to undermine the commander-in-chief ... and perhaps even the mission itself. Think back over the war coverage and ask yourself about the disgruntled troops who have taken their complaints to the media. How many of them were Marines?
Marines' gear is typically the worst. As the smallest of the four military services, Marines get the last pickings in appropriations. To compound this situation, Marines pride themselves in adapting, improvising, and overcoming. So, this very problem becomes part of Marine Corps' lore, laughter, and private (and I stress private) bitch sessions. I know a lot of our soldiers, sailors, and airmen operate with the same attitude. But for the Marines, it's in the DNA.
A word of advice to our sister services ... If you must address your chain of command about legitimate combat needs, then by all means do so. However, do it in private. That's they way respectful team members do it. And ... if you don't get what you perceive you need from the chain of command, then salute smartly, pick up your pack and get back to the battle. It's a privilege to serve.
Semper Fidelis
Update: Apparently, Spc. Wilson's question of Sec. Rumsfeld was suggested/prompted by a reporter, according to Drudge. We should be not be surprised when reporters don't play by the rules (only soldiers were to ask questions) and try to send their questions vicariously to the secretary. However, the military should have a different -- and higher -- standard of addressing grievances. The fact that the Wilson's question was suggested to him by a reporter should have given him great pause.

Moonbats Illustrated
Realignment begins ...
Some of the traffic is coming here from ... let's say ... "unexpected" sources. For example, it looks like some one stumbled over from a blog written in Arabic. Are those curse words? Will it harm my standing with Homespun Bloggers? I don't know. Just wondering. I took a stab at translating it with my Arab-English dictionary, and it looks sort of like, "Daisy Cutter?!!!? Ahhhhhh!!!! Run for your lives!!!!!" Can any one help translate?
And ... New linkage realignment analysis has begun. We will have a new cabinet and a new look going forward. It will have a lot of familiar old faces and friends, but ... you are definitely are going to see some new links on this site. Change is a constant in the blogosphere.
Voting has closed on the new blog name. The electoral college has not yet met, however, and the electors (me) can be bribed. If you would still like to vote, you can still vote, though. And then there's the recount. And the lawsuits. Keep hope alive.

Still a "day that will live in infamy"
It took me until 10:45 this a.m. to remember this day. Why?
Were the lessons of Pearl Harbor at the forefront of our minds on September 11, 2001? Not for me, at least until that morning. Indeed, I remember the exact spot I was -- as I am sure you do -- when I heard the news. Only then I didn't know what I know now, that we had been plunged into what may very well be a war that eclipses the last "ultimate" war. Unfortunately, memories fade and with them the lessons of history, though.
The lessons of both days remain eerily similar. Let's hope and pray that America's response to 9/11 is as marvelously heroic as her response was to December 7, 1941. So far, we are answering the call of history, in my view. But we must continue to answer this call as the WWII generation did.
And on this day, we recall that the lessons of Pearl Harbor parallel those of 9/11. Yet, that day belonged to another generation of heroes. Let's remember their unique sacrifice today in that perilous moment in our nation's history. And let's pray that we answer our call today as they answered theirs 63 years ago.
Daisy sends Liberal Republican Delegation to negotiate formal treaty with Moonbat2
Sources said critics of the move were murmuring that American Warmonger was pandering for Weblog Award votes, flip-flopping on the critical issue of taking a firm stand against Moonbats. No comment yet from Jeremy. However, in typical liberal Republican fashion, Jeremy is expected to blame conservative Republican Daisy Cutter for the whole mess.
Coming Soon ...
Just received some insight/commentary from a source that has something to say about Jeremy's comments about DC. I just went over to vote for Jeremy, and I see that, although he is still polling very Bednarik/Cobb-like, he has risen from 14th to 12th. Clearly, the Cutter influence is at play. And remember, Jeremy, there is always the recount ... not to change the result, of course, but to protect the integrity of the process.
Stay strong. And ... vote Cranky, as well. Dude fights like a girl and still hasn't linked me ... but it's the right thing to do ... today, that is.

Props to and vote for Jeremy
Jeremy has been a real help to me, teaching me HTML and providing many insightful comments and contributions at this site and others. He fancies himself a liberal Republican, and we would certainly not agree on every jot and tittle. But our friend Jeremy shrinketh not from the defense of this great nation's security. Indeed, he is a valued member of the coalition of the winning, and he worked his tail off to ensure that Pres. Bush was re-elected. He is an all-around great guy and team player. He seeks not only to be heard but to understand.
He served in the Navy, but I am willing to overlook this.
Jeremy is also an excellent and thought-provoking writer. I think this really sunk in when I saw his post on immigration. If you wish to be something other than a DC myrmidon, Jeremy has a nice summary of his various essays and will lead you by the hand to go vote for him at his site.
Also, I understand that he is preparing a summary post of what I have meant to his blog life. As of now, it is blank. Maybe he has completed it. I don't know. Ask him. If he has completed it, then don't vote for him.
By the way, Jeremy (in true Jeremy form) has voted for just about every option on the table in the New Blog Name election. Check out his comments below. He has voted for "whatever dude" to about five other selections. He is not hip on American Warmonger II, though. He has thus turned Virginia into a toss-up state. I thought only that little Demo cheerleader Zogby (any body heard from that li'l miscreant lately?) could do that.
Okay ... now that Jeremy has grabbed the headlines ... Make sure you read the post below, too, for my thoughts on the Weblog Awards in general. And vote for Jeremy. I taught him everything he knows. Anchors aweigh.
Update: Another reason to vote for Jeremy
Check out Jeremy's comment to Moonbat2:
Daisy, need some help rooting out moonbat2 from his anonymous cover? Lend me the IP and I'll tell you at least where he/she/it is hiding. Possibly a phone number and street address as well.Confess now Mr. Moonbat II. We have ways of making you talk! (Heck, just look at Zell Miller. Look what we did to him!) Note: all of this is in good jest if you couldn't figure it out.For those who have read American Warmonger through the election season, you know that Jeremy actually located a troll hiding under a rock in Japan. No word from MB2 since Jeremy got loose with the comment above.
Finally ... U.S. voter fraud that changes a result
Excellent coverage of the Kos Krowd's cheating exploits is found at Power Line and at Wizbang itself. Power line followed up today with a nice post, in which the the Kosite offenders as described as "morally speaking, shrivelled runts of men". Ouch. Was that troll-like commentary? Surely it must offend. But read the post. There's a point in there somewhere.
My modified take on the Weblog Awards
A few days ago, I was a little put out at all the self-promotion on the part of certain bloggers (many of whom I read and respect) who seemed a tad bit too preoccupied for my taste with encouraging their readers -- people nice enough to stop by in the first place -- to vote for them in the awards. Being a mite simple, I am now beginning to understand, however, how the Weblog Awards can help a blog get notoriety, traffic, ultimately influence and then maybe even revenue. So, I am okay with the self-promotion. Heck, maybe I will be in a position to do it some day. But still ... let me just say ... some are a little over the top. And the really biggies (I guess their balloon is already blown up, so to speak) are not doing it.
But here's what I really want to say ... The only thing that separates a lot of the really great blogs out there from fame and fortune is simply getting noticed. A good many of today's blogging leaders are also the best marketers on the web. So, let's hear it for the blogging talent that needs to get recognized ...
Essayist ... How is it the Weblog Awards without this guy being nominated? However, I see that our friend and all-around great guy and super blogger Jeremy was nominated in this very tough category. Great job, Jeremy. More on you later ...
Humor ... What about him?
And how about our pal the Carnivore? He should be up for something. If there ain't an award, we need a category.
I could go on ... The point is: Let's follow Kevin Aylward's example and see to it that the good blogging talent gets recognized. And let's also prevent the crazies from hijacking the efforts to recognize and promote good blogging talent.
We all rise as we help each other. Blog on.

Australia Votes: No Change ...
With the help of good blokes like T-Cut, DC will eventually blow up Down Under. DC loves Australia. I am going there some day. I shall. Maybe I will tour the country and be mobbed by adoring fans and live-blog the whole way? Then again, maybe I will wake up and go to work on Monday. Oh well. But, this we know: Australians love freedom and they love America.
Speaking of sham elections ... did you see that pouty face on Putin the other day when he decried the "dictatorial" nature of American foreign policy? Does he have a problem with "dictatorial" leadership now? I wonder if the frown had anything to do with his crony's fraudulent election being overturned in the Ukraine, and U.S. backing for same. Putin is hard to figure. Seems he may need another ride in the pickup in Crawford.
Speaking of shams, those of you who don't like the way the "Name Change" election comes out, remember there is always the recount.
Want more sham polls? The Longhorns look to be frozen out of the BCS. This is wrong. Recount now. I hear that Baylor and Rice are raising money for a BCS recount. No official word from Texas yet as to the Longhorns' position on the recount. Developing ...
BCS Update: Apparently Baylor and Rice make an impact, as Texas moves ahead of Cal for Rose Bowl berth. In a classy move, Cal's QB whines that Texas coach Mack Brown is "classless" for lobbying for votes for his team ... which would drub the living pee-waddly-doo out of Cal if given the chance. Cal gets what it deserves -- a game against Texas Tech in the Holiday Bowl -- for needing a blocked extra point to propel it past Southern Mississippi. Cal was lucky to win that game for sure. Memo to Cal: Tech passes a hair better than Southern Miss.
But Cal's arguments ... and Auburn's as well ... underscore the need for voting reform in college football. Thanks to all of the socialist former UT students and Daily Kos readers who hacked into the BCS computers and propelled the Longhorns past Cal.
Australia threatens to steal Blog Name Election
Eschewing the land area method, My Australian cousin has put forth the "beach method" (Australia has more than 7,000) for tallying electoral votes. This could turn out to be a shrewd method, or the Aussies could be overwhelmed by DC's Minnesota readers, who are advocating the "lake method". Stay tuned.
Flash: Moonbat2 & Daisy in Peace Accord!! People dance in streets of Kiev!
MB2 welcome (as are trolls, by the way, if for nothing but for the sheer entertainment) to offer opinions as "loyal opposition". MB2 ponders giving up anonymous standing, thus risking killer posts and emails from DC ... posts/emails that very well may alter MB2's thinking, and others (cue V. Price laugh).
Update: Actual moonbat sighting. Bill's got the scoop. Hat tip to our friend Sherry for pointing it out
MB2, take the stand and swear that you were not there. I've got trial lawyers waiting to question you.
Blog name voting update: Voting may close soon. Will close when I say it does. Electoral college meets when I decide. And I am all of the electors. But ... I do value your opinions. Keep 'em coming. I continue to have a soft spot for limericks. The Carnivorous Conservative, one of the coolest guys in the 'sphere and a blogger friend who has really helped me at this site, has weighed in for no change. Thus, in this shocking development, all of NJ's electoral votes go in the "no change" column.
However, a change-minded limerician could still take this thing the other way. So, stay tuned.
And ... I am going to get to the "Voter Fraud" story (re: the Weblog Awards, of course), but probably not until late tomorrow p.m. Christmas (sorry MB2) ... er holiday ... decorations to put up, you see.

Breaking: In gesture of friendship and brotherhood, trolls accuse Daisy of being troll.
Voting continues on a potential new blog name. However, for those favoring change, another heavy hitter (JR the Homey) has voted and given Texas' electoral votes ... again ... for no change. And JR even chimed in a with limerick, albeit a lame one by Texican Tattler standards. But we have doubled the total electoral votes nonetheless. I am tallying them myself and hacking in when necessary to guide this thing to the proper result, so we don't have current tallies. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, Anonymous Moonbat Troll has commented in the New Blog Name thread below that it thinks that I am a troll. I appreciate its offer of brotherhood/knighthood, but let's examinine the charge. First, let us consult the Wikipedia definition of "troll". A "troll" is defined as either:
Daisy's brilliant Kos post analyzed for "troll" characteristics1. A person who makes posts (on newsgroups or other forums) that are solely intended to provoke responses from others, or to cause annoyance or offense; or
2. A post that is intended to incite controversy or cause offense. (Many posts may inadvertently cause strife as collateral damage, but they are not trolls. (emphasis mine)
My recent post at Kos addressed the confirmation of Pres. Bush's approximately 120,000 vote victory in Ohio after the counting of the approximately 155,000 outstanding provisional ballots. Here is the post:
I guess I could have said, "Aw shucks, fellers (Texan for fellows), cain't we justa get along now?" But let me ask, do you think there was a point to the post other than to offend? Indeed, the point I was trying to make to our friends at Kos (and let me just say that not all of them over there are the Recount Lunatic Fringe) is that all of the conspiracy theories are being discredited at a rapid pace and that efforts to turn Ohio 2004 into Florida 2000 will further alienate an electorate already alienated from Demos. Don't believe me? Look at how glistening red that Florida is in 2004. Truthfully, I am not really concerned that the Demos undermine their electoral chances. However, I am concerned that their win-at-all-costs mindset ultimately undermines Americans' confidence in the integrity of the nation's institutions as a whole."These numbers show what really happened. It is time to recount. Recount now!!! Recount!!
“Every body ... on three ... one, two, three ...
“Moonbats: BARK!!!
"In all seriousness, the Miami paper has shown exactly what happened in Florida, and Nader's NH folly was shown to be just that ... folly.
“Do you hard-lefties really love party more than country? If so, it's going to be a long half-century for you.”
Let me just state the following for the record: I have never written a post to annoy or harrass. I am certain that my conservative opinions by their very existence do cause wailing and gnashing of teeth by the Left. But, that's okay, and that's their problem. "This ain't beanbag", as the genius architect of campaign-finance reform has frequently told us. Find me an insulting, profanity-laden post of mine and I will offer my apologies on the offended site.
Daisy content explanation insert -- Note: If you are a dour, humorless Leftist ... you may mistake comments, political discussion, even good-natured ribbing, as vile, personal attacks. Again, this is your problem. Get help, if necessary. A clinic is now open for your assistance at Goomba-Shrink.org. Tell Nickie I sent you.
Bottom line: The Left has got to come to grips with the fact that there are a lot of people in this country who don't agree with them and are not going to stand by and take it. Deal with it. It's part of the perils of a free society.
Daisy's Version of the Troll Brotherhood
Now, as for what I would consider a troll ... Please note the following anonymous responses from various moonbats regarding my new name poll:
Here's another nice one:"How about Cons R Scum ... Up Yr Moms Ass"
"I'm thinking "Pathetic ramblin's of a immature child".Nice, huh? Man, nominate these humorists for the Blog Awards. And let me just say, I am raising an immature child, and I don't appreciate that last one. In all seriousness, these comments aren't funny, and they appear to match the "troll" definition. Yet, the same folks want to put me in the club. I know I am a simpleton, but I don't understand. Help me here.
But really, to the the liberals of good will, I would say: Join in the debate and fun. And don't take yourselves ... or others ... so seriously. If we conservative right-wing-nut-jobs are so wacko, then by God don't let us run/ruin your lives. Have fun. Get after it. Engage in the debate. Visit this site and others and take us on. Tell us where we are wrong. Smile. Live. Love. Laugh. Grow. Pray. Sorry, I didn't mean to scare you off.
But watch out. You might become one of "us" in the process. (Cue Vincent Price laugh.)
Out
P.S. Coming soon ... Fraud at the Blog Awards .... Exposed!!!!
Update ... breaking:
Anonymous Moonbat2 replies (see comments) deep from the recesses of the blue netherworld: He admits that fellow Moonbats have engaged in troll-like behavior on this very site. No moonbat trolls are identified, however. Further, no apologies are extended. Negotiations continue. (See DC's excellent retort in comments.)
Additionally, Moonbat2 objects to Daisy's accurate charge that some Moonbats put party before country. Heck, even JFK conceded, but the Moonbats press on. "We should apologize to the Ukraine, etc." Blah, blah, blah. If the truth fits ... a troll isn't it, or something like that. There's some trial lawyer lingo, for you.
Update 5:20 p.m. CST ... Moonbat2 appointed as Moonbat Ambassador ... Makes bold move for peace:
Yes, it is true. Negotiations have yielded fruit. Moonbat2 disclaims Moonbat status, yet fails to adequately explain moniker. Offers no apology. DC thaws ice, stating that no apology required as Moonbat2 and other such miscreants are mere anonymous, ideological gnats. Maybe that didn't thaw things, but ... Moonbat2 offers to apologize for all trolls appearing on this site in a gesture of extraordinary sacrifice and propitiation, provided that Daisy apologizes for all trolls ever appearing on Kos. Seems like an even trade to DC.
Thus, Daisy apologizes: I hereby apologize for every one who has ever appeared at the Daily Kos and hurt the feelings of the very sensitive, feeling, caring and loving .... wild-eyed, barking moonbats that often frequent that site.
DC now awaits reciprocal apology and also ... Moonbat2's proof that it has entered (on behalf of all DC trolls) troll 12-step recovery program.
Matt Damon: He likes Shakespeare's work because it is "dense"
So, please continue to weigh in (even you cowardly little moonbats firing off anonymous shots at the great DC from your little blue caves). Vote below. I am taking it all in. Not sure when the electoral college meets, but I understand that that there is massive fraud in the process any way and that the whole deal is just basically rigged. (I am hacking the votes and sending in my own comments to steer the process to the desired result, but ...) That's why I am collecting money for a recount. Not to change the result, just to make sure that all of your votes are counted. it's all about the process, not the result.
Tip for voters: Voting by limerick carries more electoral votes than Ohio, Florida, and Texas combined.

Nice people. Fortunately, we don't have to rely upon such citizens to smoke out and destroy the enemies of America.

Whose sparse posting made him/her appear lazy.
So he/she thought about a post
But his/her work actually needed him/her most
Plus you already know the Demos are still crazy.
Update: I see that my poetic genius has inspired other would-be limerickicians and geniuses ... thus far Goomba and Jeremy. See comments and add your limerick, if you dare. Winner gets a free subscription for one year, at least.
